Born into the Nehru family, it is not surprising that politics and history inspire much of Nayantara Sahgal’s writing, beginning with her memoir, Prison and Chocolate Cake. Sahgal is the recipient of the Sinclair Prize for Fiction, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize. She has held fellowships in the USA at the Bunting Institute, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and the National Humanities Center. She was awarded the 1986 Sahitya Akademi Award for Rich Like Us. In October 2015, she returned the award to protest the “increasing intolerance” in the country.
